PHILIPPINE NATIONAL POLICE

Updated: Feb 13, 2023

The Department of the Interior and Local Government Act of 1990, which was enacted on December 13, 1990, Republic Act No. 6975, paved the way for a new era in Philippine law enforcement by mandating the complete merger of the Philippine Constabulary and the Integrated National Police and formally establishing the Philippine National Police. The armed national police force in the Philippines is known as the Philippine National Police. In Bagong Lipunan ng Crame, Quezon City, Camp Crame serves as the organization's national headquarters. There are currently 220,000 police officers there to keep an estimated 100 million people safe.

The National Police Commission, which is a division of the Department of the Interior and Local Government, is in charge of managing and overseeing the organization (DILG). Municipal mayors have operational control over local police officers. In contrast, DILG organizes, trains, and equips the PNP to carry out police duties as a police force that is both national in scope and civilian in nature.

One of the main responsibilities of the PNP is to maintain peace and order in the Philippines. This includes responding to calls for assistance, investigating crimes, and making arrests. The PNP also plays a key role in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency efforts, as well as in disaster response and management. To achieve its mission and vision, the PNP has implemented a number of programs and initiatives aimed at modernizing its operations, improving its service delivery, and enhancing its capability to combat crime and terrorism.
